I think by now everyone understands that social media marketing is important. It’s been around long enough to have sunk in for most people. And, it’s also been around for enough time that people have had a chance to see the benefits of social marketing (when they are able to do it).
However, the fact that Google has its own social media resource continues to seem strange to some. And, I’m still finding people that didn’t know that Google’s social media is tied into search for logged-in users.
Unfortunately, business owners often have to decide where to spend their precious time, and social marketing is a valuable but highly-time consuming marketing tool. On top of this, Google+ continues to lack the amount of user activity that Facebook boasts, (or so says the sources):
- 901M Facebook “Active” Users
Say what you will about skewed numbers, it’s a big enough difference that even if we took Facebook’s claimed “Daily Active Users” instead, it’s still a whopping 526 million. For business owners worried about their time and going where the people are, it’s hard to be concerned about Google+.
The Key? Google+ Shows Up In Search…And This Could Become More And More Important
I think the key for a business is to at least have a Google+ page for the simple fact that it does show up in the searches (for logged-in users), and to try and have some “Circles” – this is one way of how you can help your business show up in people’s searches, when they are logged in. As a Google+ Business Page (no idea if that’s the technical term, that’s just what I’m referring to it as for now), you cannot put a person in your Circle first. You have to get them to put your Business Page into their Circle first, and how you do that requires…you guessed it! Networking! Online or offline, it takes the old-fashioned, time-consuming aspect of networking. Only once someone has put your Business into one of their Circles can you, as your Business, add them into one of your Circles as your Business Page, and you begin to show up in their search.
However, even just having a Google+ page seems to help your Business in search. I haven’t researched this extensively enough to figure out by how much, I simply know that it plays a roll for any Google users that are signed in.
Either Way? Just Continue Social Marketing, And Keep Your Eye On Google+
Whether you continue to market on Google+, however, is completely up to you, and whether you even have clients on Google+. Or, maybe you can find an interest-group that relates to your kind of work on Google+. I simply recommend, as Jamie suggested in his early blog post, that you begin paying attention to Google+, even if only to have a Google+ Business Page for now.
To each his (or her) own social media marketing. Who knows, maybe you will find the majority of your clientele on a different social media. Perhaps you should run a survey and ask!
