So no sooner had I started writing out my post for last Friday when I stumbled across this article by Erica Ayotte.
It’s an excellent article. “Social media is not magic” is a great section, and in particular, I thought this paragraph really hit home: “What social media can do is amplify almost any area of your business…. But mapping social activities to business goals doesn’t happen magically. And while social can certainly help these areas, it’s not going to fix what’s already broke.”
What is the purpose of social media marketing? Ayotte covers some great points later in the article under “So why do it?” I would sum up her points by pointing to how many items in that list are focused on the customer: social media marketing is connecting with your customers. Socially connecting. Personally and professionally.
Perhaps what makes Social Media Marketing so hard for some businesses to understand is recognizing that while it might be a type of marketing in the broad sense of the word, it does not fall under the traditional marketing efforts. What you write for a sales letter would fail on a social media. Promotion of sales of products and services only works so far. Social media marketing is different from other types of marketing – and that’s okay! It should be different. In this regard, though, it’s imperative to have the right mindset about social media marketing when you venture into the social media world.
Just some more social media marketing thoughts for you!
