Businesses are built on goals. It’s important for you to understand what you are trying to achieve so that you can get there in the shortest amount of time possible. If you’re reading this blog, you understand that internet marketing is a cornerstone of building a business that is successful and thriving.

However, have you stopped and considered whether your goals surrounding internet marketing are realistic or not? Here are some tips to help you ensure that your goals aren’t just lofty and beautiful, but also realistic and achievable.

You must have a clear objective. While the ultimate point is, of course, to get conversions, have you decided what, exactly, you are trying to achieve? Are you trying to protect or enhance your reputation or brand identity? Are you solely trying to drive sales or leads? It’s important to know!

The rules of engagement. Engagement is a major buzzword in the industry right now. Getting “liked” on Facebook or “retweeted” on Twitter is huge – but, again, remember that “engagement” doesn’t necessarily mean conversions. You could have a million “likes” and not make a dime! Make sure that your goals also involve understanding what certain elements of internet marketing are supposed to do.

Get SMART. Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Relevant. Timebound. If your marketing goals aren’t SMART, you won’t be getting very far.

Do your research. Do you have an ideal client in mind? If you can’t name your target client extremely specifically (a 40-year-old soccer mom who has kids and a part time job and drives a Prius, for example), you need to do some more research. Do you know who your competition is? If not, get cracking and get researching.

Do you have the right tools? If you’re not signed up with Google Analytics, you should be. This incredible tool allows you to answer vital questions such as, Where do my site visitors go most often? What gets the most clicks? Which of my blogs were the most successful?

Do you need a friend? Sometimes, two heads are better than one. If you are not as familiar with the internet, partnering with a competent internet marketing firm can help you realize your goals, or at least offer you consulting so you can be assured that your current internet marketing goals are the right ones for your business.
